Breeding and Contest Information

So you want to be a Breeder do you?

No doubt you've come here from the Entralink page- if not, you should probably check it out to see what you'll get to start off. Otherwise, read on! Being a Breeder is quite different from simply training Pokemon; Breeders aren't expected to fight battles, at least not outside of the Little Cup. Though many will keep a few stronger pokemon around for protection and Breeding purposes, they're largely known for gathering large crowds of younger ones. In fact, for each Ribbon a breeder has, they can carry two extra pokemon with them. This is considered a Passive Grant; which means that collecting five 'Basic' Ribbons would allow for ten pokemon! (Though make sure you can handle that!)

The links below will lead to useful points for Breeders. Some link to points on this very page; others however, have their own pages, such as the Berry Market. They're all well worth the read through, so be sure to check them all out!

Being a Breeder typically entails the following:

Caring for Pokemon

Breeders are encouraged to teach themselves how to massage and groom pokemon, for which the manual they receive has key instructions. Not only do these things improve the appearance of a pokemon, they also help to make them more friendly, and happy- a key part of evolution for many species!

Cooking for Pokemon

Another skill Breeders should take care to learn is cooking; Poffins and Pokeblocks are good as both treats and skill raising foods, and other basic dishes are essential to a healthy, happy pokemon! Though a pot and blender is not included in the free package given to Breeders, such equipment can typically be found for free-use in Pokemon Centers, or in the case of Nimbasa, the Contest Hall. They're also included in any Caravan with a Kitchen.

Breeding Pokemon, and Selling Eggs

When two pokemon like each other very much... ...We just don't know. Surprisingly enough, all pokemon lay eggs, and even more bizarrely, no one seems to manage to catch them laying it. Rather, if two pokemon of compatible species happen to be fond of each other, an egg will quite literally just 'appear'. How often this egg appears varies, but after much study, a price guide was created based on the rate of egg appearances and species.

Note that in the event of Ditto breeding however, the rules change- inherited moves come from the Mother rather than the Father in the case of a Female-Ditto pairing, and in the case of a pairing of Ditto with a male Pokemon, the species will always be the same as the Father!

Sometimes the egg will hatch into something else though! For this to occur, there could be a few key conditions to be fulfilled; if it's a matter of two Pikachu creating a Pichu, the rules of Rarity are the same. However for pokemon such as Azurill, or Munchlax for exampe, the price of an egg increases by 250P. A list of 'compatible match options' and such item triggers can be found here. As for what counts as a 'compatible' species? A pair of pokemon sharing the same Egg Group! You can find a list of those here.

As for the eggs and their prices, take a look! The rarer the pokemon, the rarer the appearance of an egg, and the rarer the appearance of the egg, the more expensive the price is- however as already noted, there are other 'add-ons' which can affect the price. What to do when the rarity of a pokemon varies? Use the same rarity as the area where the pokemon was caught. So if a pokemon was Really Rare where it was caught, but is only 'Rare' in another area, the pricing follows the 'Really Rare' values.

The possible variables on price are thus:

Participate in Contests

The Contest Hall of Nimbasa is where the Breeder's efforts shine. While many trainers will purchase Breeder Eggs in hopes of a stronger pokemon, often times the Hall is where such strength is shown from the Breeder's themselves. Nimbasa holds a contest every two months; they hold the event in the first half of the season, and then conduct the judging in the second, releasing the results to the public before presenting the prizes. Breeders may enter each of the three categories of Contest at once; however they can only enter in one classification of the Appeals Contest, and they cannot gather multiple ribbons per rank of Appeals.

Much like badges, ribbons grant a triggering effect within the Entralink; however they're more potent than badges, and additionally have a habit of cancelling each other out on a similar level.

For this reason, Ribbons have what are called Passive Abilities, and Active Abilities. As a Passive Ability, a ribbon allows Breeders to move to the next rank of Contest, or in the case of Dream Rank, it gives them a place in the Hall of Fame. For each ribbon carried, a Breeder has the right to carry two additional pokemon with them, regardless of the typical six-pokemon party cap. Mind, it's a good idea to consider the physical limit as well; if you can look after thirty pokemon at once then great! But can you really? (You crazy Purrloin lady you)

At any rate, there are three different classes of Contest, and all of them are listed below:

Appeals Round

The Appeals Round was adopted from Hoenn's contest tradition, and involves the use of Pokemon 'moves' in a different sort of fashion. There are five classifications of Appeals; Breeders may only earn one ribbon per rank in Appeals, but they can alternate which class they choose. These classes are: Beauty, Cool, Cute, Smart, and Tough. In each Appeal, certain moves will garner the attention of Judges, while others won't at all- though the winner is partially decided through a Random Number Generator, having more moves to display which are appropriate to the category will boost the chances considerably! (In contrast, having an opposing move lessens it.)

A key thing to realize about the Appeals is that variation is key; the Judges aren't here to see how long you can hold an Ice Beam after all! They're here to see how you combine it with Air Slash, or how you manage to follow up Hurricane with Sunny Day. Don't fret if you don't have two moves in the right class though! While certain moves will dock points, other moves can still be combined to some extent, without penalty. The chart below will help with this; just remember to avoid moves which will dock you marks!

Keep in mind that as the rank rises, the chances of a win continue to decrease; successfully netting first place in the Master, and especially the Dream Rank, is notoriously difficult!

Beauty Contest

A matter of sheen and cleanliness, participants of the Beauty Contest dress their pokemon up in a certain number of accessories and props before standing beside them on stage as the Judges examine entrants. While it's partially a test of appearance, it's also a test of patience; how long can your pokemon sit still while the Judges pass?

Winners of the Beauty Contest are chosen through two calculations- first, the number of accessories and props. The closer to the maximum number, the higher chance there is of a win. This chance in question refers to the second calculation; an entirely random number generator. If a participant has more accessories than the others, they'll have a slightly better chance at the RNG results. Therefore, they have a greater chance of winning overall!

As the contest rank rises however, that chance of winning decreases regardless; to win first place in the Master, or more impressively, Dream Ranks, is amazingly hard to pull off.

Little Cup

The final of the three major categories of Contest, the Little Cup focuses heavily on the strength of a bloodline and the strategic prowess of the Breeder. The Little Cup is a pokemon battle tournament of a particularly interesting sort; pokemon which take part cannot be evolved, and must be level five or lower. Because of this, battles often last as few as two-three moves; and that's where the breeding comes in.

The Little Cup is the only tournament not decided by RNG. Instead, the Mods actually input the stats of the entered pokemon on a tournament chart, and battle through each one until a winner is found. Obviously, the typical moveset for a hatched pokemon doesn't quite cut it here- but with egg moves, or TMs, baby pokemon can become a serious threat to their similarly leveled opponents! Consider your weaknesses and strengths- and success will no doubt follow!

Keep in mind that as rank increases, if there are too few opponents, then an 'NPC' opponent will be formed; the NPC for Master- and especially Dream Rank- are extremely difficult to defeat!

Prizes

At the end of the day, it wouldn't be very profitable if Breeders spent all their time at Contests for no reason; winners of each contest category are presented prizes for the first, second, and third placements, and all contests receive the following:

1 Ribbon, according to the category/contest classification
1 Accessory or Prop of choice
1 TM or HM of choice
A Money and Berry Prize, according to the below chart:

So overall? It's possible to have three ribbons per rank; one for Appeals, one for Beauty, and one for Little Cup, but continuing that trend through the remaining ranks is notoriously difficult; more importantly, after a ribbon has been won, that particular category cannot be entered in at the won rank again!
