The Pokeathalon
Opening for the first time in Unova, the Pokeathalon Building has at last been unveiled upon the docks south of Driftveil, hosting a variety of events within the enormous dome-like arena. Featuring numerous specialized rooms for training and competition, the Pokeathalon may lack the official status given with Contests and Gym Challenges, but it's well worth the visit! Aside from the events offered to 'pokeathletes' in the form of various physical challenges, a number of specialized move tutors have also gathered here, who will gladly teach certain pokemon powerful techniques only they can achieve. Also available are the ApriJuices, which seem to hold no effect for athletes in the dome, but may just come in handy for contests...
Though the competitions are held every day, competitors are barred from entering more than once every two weeks for the fist three levels of competition, and a full month for the final levels; pokemon need time to recover after all, and such things can be more taxing on the body than even a pokemon battle!
APRIJUICE
Squeezed from the juices of imported apricorns, ApriJuice at a first glance seems to hold no real purpose for pokemon, but in reality unlocks, for a brief instant, a fair bit of hidden potential; varying in concentration levels, the juices boost changes of a pokemon doing well in most contests, or so the rumor goes. Each of the seven Apricorn Colours has a certain effect- and all of them last through one single contest. The ApriJuice effects can't be stacked however; if a pokemon drinks a Black drink first, and a Blue drink after, they will only benefit from the Blue during their next contest. Additionally, the prices of such drinks increase with the concentration level of the juice, so choose wisely!
MOVE TUTORS
Hailing from regions unknown, there are a few specialized Tutors here; the pokemon, along with the moves they teach, are listed beside them.
THE POKEATHALON
The moment you've all been waiting for has arrived! Welcome to the main event, though really, there are many. For each Pokeathalon challenge, challengers must choose three pokemon to participate in the event of choice. There are five levels of difficulty per challenge; each one can be accessed only when all those before it have been passed, and though one TM is always awarded to the winner regardless, the money prize always changes with it. Additionally, winners receive coupons for certain ApriJuices! Lucky!
However it's not all that simple. Pokemon participating in the events can only do so much- each pokemon is unique, and bears in itself the potential for greatness in some aspects, but not necessarily all of them. You can't, for example, expect a diglett to be a 'jumping' master!
A full list of Pokemon, and the fullest potential they bear in each key 'stat' for the Pokeathalon can be found here. However pokemon do not merely start out with such power. For each Star of potential, a pokemon must gain ten levels for 'half', and twenty for 'one'. The chart below can be used as a guide for this.
The Events
Are you ready for the races? Well then now it's time to begin! Regardless of the challenge, the prizes will all be the same; between the five tiers of competition, there's a certain chance of winning the top prize. It gets more difficult as you go however, so watch it!
In addition to a single TM of choice, all participants who achieve first prize will receive a money sum. However there's a catch!
Not only can you only win the money prize once, but only certain TMs will be presented! The numbers available to each level are listed in the chart below, along with the money prize. Use this list here for reference when choosing your TM/HM. It sounds like a bit of a pain admittedly, but the reasoning is this:
HMs won from the Pokeathalon can be used outside of battle regardless of Trainer Status; this means that those who aren't taking the Gym Challenge, and additionally lack a Breeder's Licence will be able to use the HMs! For this reason, the Dome has been forced to regulate the presentation of such discs.
Hurdle Dash
Speed - Jump - Skill
The three competing pokemon for your team will be placed on a track and given the order to run; those with enough skill will be able to boost their speed just before jumping a hurdle, and those with sufficient speed and jumping ability will be able to properly leap the hurdles while making headway.
Ring Drop
Speed - Power - Stamina - Jump
One at a time, athletes will face three others in the raised ring, attempting to force others off the edge. Athletes may swap out with the other two in their corner of the ring, however when an athlete faints, they can't go back in! Pokemon with considerable stamina will be able to take more hits from their opponents, while those with great power will be able to deal out more hits; speed and jump ability is also recommended, for swift and agile movement about the field.
Snow Throw
Power - Stamina - Skill
Available even in the summertime, all three athletes will be given a side of the cold-snow room, from which they must throw as many snowballs at the other three teams as possible; the last ones standing win! Pokemon with great power are able to even knock an opponent flying, while those with great stamina can resist such a thing from happening. However it takes skill to throw a snowball quickly and accurately.
Lamp Jump
Jump - Power - Stamina - Skill
In the Lamp Jump Challenge, the three athletes leap up from the trampoline arena toward lights above, touching them to make them turn off for a short time; the goal is to turn off as many lamps as possible. Pokemon with great power can launch their teammates higher up to hit more lights, while those with stamina can recover quickly after an accidental collision with those same teammates. A combination of Jump and Skill is key in snuffing all the lights however.
Relay Run
Speed - Skill - Power - Stamina
For the relay run, the athletes will race around the track, passing a baton to their partners upon the completion of a round. As there are no track lines, and a number of obstacles littering the track itself, it's possible for pokemon to collide with their opponents; while speed and skill is key to pace oneself for the speed of the race, power and stamina will also be needed to hold speed while resisting collision damage.
Block Smash
Skill - Power - Stamina
Athletes will be presented with a series of concrete blocks, which they must break multiple times in succession; pokemon who become fatigued during this effort are encouraged to swap out with their teammates, sharing the workload and more efficiently breaking the blocks. It takes skill to control the amount of energy exerted in these efforts, though increased Stamina means more energy overall. Power of course, also helps- the more power a pokemon has, the more blocks they can break in a single hit!
Circle Push
Speed - Power - Stamina
Similar to the Ring Drop, circles will be lit up upon the arena, with each one slowly shrinking in size. All three athletes must do their best to stay within this circle, while keeping their opponents out of it; speed will be needed to move from circle to circle, however pokemon will also require the Stamina to hold firm within it, and Power to push their opponents away.
Disc Catch
Speed - Jump - Power
Multiple discs will be tossed out toward the platform where athletes are stationed, with pokemon aiming to catch as many as possible. Catching it quickly means they earn more points, but pokemon will be fighting to the teeth to reach these discs first; in addition to speed and jump power, pokemon will therefore need the Power to knock opponents away.
Pennant Capture
Speed - Skill - Power - Stamina
Athletes will be gathered into a large beach area, with one competing at a time. Pokemon will have the coal of gathering as many flags as possible, tagging off with teammates to drop them off at their base; however not only is skill required to keep footing in the sandy expanse, but pokemon will be fighting each other for the flags- therefore, Power and Stamina both will be required as well.
Goal Roll
Speed - Skill - Power - Stamina
A four way soccer match between teams of three athletes; pokemon will aim to score goals by kicking the ball into opponents nets, while guarding their own. If pokemon have enough power, they can even kick the ball with such force that it breaks the defenses of a goal- however pokemon with enough Stamina will be able to resist.
